Kell Brook returned with a win in Sheffield on Saturday night. The former IBF welterweight champion ended his 14-month hiatus from the sport in emphatic fashion.

Brook knocked out Mark DeLuca in the seventh round of his main event comeback fight. He could now meet fellow Brit, Liam Smith in an effort to establish himself as the WBO mandatory challenger at 154lbs.

Speaking immediately after his win, ‘The Special One’ outlined his plans moving forward, he said. “2020 is the year that I become world champion again.”

On the potential match-up with former sparring partner Smith, he said. “I don’t shy away from any fighter, I have a lot of respect for Liam Smith, he boxed a stablemate of mine in Liam Williams.

“I’ve sparred him and if those spars are anything to go by, the fight would be amazing. I know he wants the fight. We’ll sit down with Eddie [Hearn] this week. I love the Smith family but once we get in there, it’s business.”

Liam is one fourth of the fighting Smith brother from Liverpool, England. He is a former world champion and has fought the likes of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Jaime Munguia. His name carries weight at home and abroad giving a potential fight with Brook global appeal. It’ll be interesting to see these two men thrown down for the chance at another shot at a world title.

The domestic super fight appears to put an end to a rumoured fight with bitter rival Amir Khan. Despite years of back and forth the pair have failed to make the once desired fight. ‘King’ Khan has often had bigger fish to fry and Brook has been left in the cold. However, it appears the Sheffield fighter is now done with chasing that fight. By committing fully to light middleweight and pursuing other lucrative fights.
