Urban Meyer called Dwayne Haskins “the best quarterback at his age” the Ohio State coach has ever seen.
Ohio State put another stamp on an outstanding recruiting haul on Wednesday. One of the biggest prospects in the Buckeyes’ No. 2-ranked class is 4-star quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. Haskins flipped his commitment from the home-state Maryland Terrapins in January.
Urban Meyer had been after the Potomac, Maryland prospect for quite a while. On National Signing Day, he discussed Haskins’ recruiting process with Scout.com.
“As a sophomore, he was very good,” Meyer said. “He was immature. He came from a great family. He had a very live arm but extremely skinny.”
But as time went on, the relationship between Meyer and Haskins cooled off, and he wound up committing to the Terrapins.
Meyer eventually had a chance to see his latest quarterback commit work out some time after that, and he noticed Haskins’ game was night and day.
“He’s the best quarterback, at his age, I’ve ever seen. And, fundamentally, his quarterback coach has done a phenomenal job. You just watch his release, and I probably watched it 700 times. His release, his footwork, his bounce in the pocket, his ability to get out of trouble, and his arm strength and size now are absolutely ideal.”
Strong words for a coach who’s recruited and coached the likes of Alex Smith, Tim Tebow, Cam Newton and J.T. Barrett. No pressure.
