Boxers Bash Ronda Rousey: She Can’t Hit Or Move

It’s no secret what the strong point of dominant UFC women’s bantamweight champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey is: her Olympic level Judo, and devastating submission skills. However, it seems as if her striking and boxing has steadily improved as she has scored three T/KOs in her last four bouts, her most recent a brutal one punch knockout of Bethe Correia.

Rousey’s head coach, Edmond Tarverydan, has also not been quiet about the progress of his star pupil, previously saying that the “Rowdy” one could be a boxing champion. However, it seems as if some high-level female boxers do not agree with those statements.

WBA Champion Layla McCarter recently spoke with the Guardian on the topic, saying that Rousey is skilled at what she does, but that it would be a disaster if the bantamweight queen jumped into boxing:

“I think she’s just brand new at boxing,” McCarter said. “She’s very good at what she does, but she needs to stay in her lane because boxing takes a lot of experience to reach the top level. She better just stay in her lane because she’s going to get hurt.”

“I know [Rousey competing in boxing] would be a disaster for her and I know Dana White would never let that happen.”

Another female boxing champion in multi-division champ Amanda Serrano weighed in on the topic as well, bashing not only Rousey, but Tarverdyan as well. Serrano stated that Rousey has bad movement, and actually said that the “Rowdy” one looks like an amateur rookie in terms of boxing.

Serrano also mentioned that Tarverydan doesn’t know what he’s talking about, and that it’s easy to look great against unskilled opponents:

“Her movement is very bad, how she walks into punches and she would get caught,” she said. “The girls that she’s fighting, they’ve got limited boxing skills.”

“Definitely Rousey’s trainer does not have any knowledge about the sport of boxing,” Serrano told Round by Round Boxing, “Her opponents cannot box and it’s easy to look great… As a boxing point of view, she looked like a rookie amateur fighter, throwing very wide punches with no coordination.”

Serrano even took it a step further, speaking on footage of Rousey sparring with Vic Darchinyan, and let’s just say that the boxing champ wasn’t impressed. Serrano picked apart the “Rowdy” one’s technique, saying that she believes Rousey lost every round of the session:

“You were able to see that her boxing skills weren’t there,” Serrano said. “He was throwing stupid punches and catching her. Her movement, her whole body mechanics weren’t there. Her hands were down, she was doing something with her elbow, at one point she was trying to be like Mayweather. It just wasn’t put together right.”

“In fact, they made a mistake putting (the video) up. I don’t know how the trainer Edmond says she’s never lost a round in the gym. Even the best of the best lose in the gym. From what I seen in that sparring session with Victor, she lost every round.”

In closing, Serrano’s manager spoke as well, saying that the fighters just want respect, and that they will be available for any sparring or boxing matches to prove to Rousey’s camp how wrong they are about boxing:

“We do not challenge other fighting styles. We represent boxing and we want to get some respect,” Jordan Maldonado said. “We are available for any sparring they may want or a boxing match, so we can show Edmond Tarverdyan how wrong he is about boxing.”

Wow! Well, Rousey sure heard an earful from these ladies. Do you agree with the two female boxing champions?
