Doc Holliday Marshall West Virginia

If Marshall head coach Doc Holliday had his way, his Thundering Herd team would match up against in-state rival West Virginia each and every year.

“I’ve said all along that the game should be played,” Holliday told Campus Insiders in an exclusive interview at Conference USA Media Days on Tuesday. “We’re sure not hurting our strength of schedule by any way, shape, or form.”

The two schools have met 12 times in the program’s history, with seven of them being since 1997, the year Marshall joined Division I-A (now FBS). They met yearly between 2006-12,

with the Mountaineers winning each matchup.

“It’s a great game,” Holliday said. “The stadiums are always packed, whether it be at Marshall or West Virginia.”

While playing the Mountaineers would be something Holliday would like to see happen, he said he is not going to spend all of his time worrying about it.

“I’ve got more important things to worry about,” Holliday said. “I’ll leave that up to [athletic director] Mike Hamrick and the brass. It probably won’t happen in my tenure, but it needs to somewhere down the road.”
