Rex Walters Sacked By San Francisco

University of San Francisco have parted ways with head coach Rex Walter. The 1993 first round NBA draft pick had enjoyed eight successful season at USF between 2008-2016.

In this past season the Dons went 15-15 overall including an 8-10 record in the WCC. That record pretty much sums up his record the school which he leaves with an even record of 127 wins and 127 losses.  

In a statement USF athletic director Scott Sidwell said. “I felt a change in the leadership of the program was necessary at this time in order for us to progress toward our goal of winning a conference championship and to compete in postseason play on a regular basis.” USF athletic director Scott Sidwell said in a statement.

The search has now begun for a replacement, with two coaches already believed to be in the frame.

Former UCLA and St John’s head coach Steve Lavin is considered a favourite for the role. This season Lavin has been working on TV as an analyst. He has serious ties to the school with his father Cap inducted into the USF hall of fame for his standout performances during the 1950’s.

Another option is current Eastern Washington head coach Jim Hayford, who may be tempted should the USF officials decide to make the approach.

Walters time at USF was marred by several key players leaving the program earlier than expected. The two most notable saw six players transfer in the aftermath of the 2011-12 season. In November 2013, when senior point guard Cody Doolin quit the team after a fight with a teammate in practice.

Despite having two years left on his contract Walters seems happy with what he has achieved during his time at USF. He spoke of being “proud” upon news of his sacking. He’ll now take some time out of the game before seeking another coaching job.
