Canelo Alvarez defeats William Scull in disappointing encounter

Canelo Alvarez, William Scull

Canelo Alvarez defeated William Scull last night in what proved to be a dull encounter in Saudi Arabia.

Canelo Alvarez is now the undisputed super middleweight champion after defeating William Scull via unanimous decision with scores of 115-113, 116-112 and 119-109. While Canelo tried to get his power punching going, Scull largely started on the outside and tried to edge out a gritty victory.

Alas, against someone like Canelo Alvarez, that’s hardly ever going to work – and it didn’t here. The Mexican sensation was still able to largely dictate the terms of the fight but, as you can imagine, it wasn’t a win that was particularly well received. After the contest was over, even Canelo showed some frustration with how it all played out.

Canelo Alvarez reacts to dull win

“It was a boring fight. A fighter not trying to win and just trying to survive. I hate those kind of fighters,” Alvarez, 34, said.

“Everything happens for a reason and there’s a reason why I’m here. In September I’ll show the world what greatness looks like,” he said.

The great Canelo Alvarez, unfortunately, didn’t wind up looking so great last night. The good news for boxing fans, though, is that this sets up the one we’ve been waiting for – a superfight against Terence Crawford. It’s already been announced to take place on September 12 in Las Vegas, Nevada and it’ll be for all the gold.

Naturally, though, some are hesitant to get too excited after what they witnessed here. It just wasn’t the kind of win that gave anyone any kind of confidence about where Canelo is at right now in his career, and that’s understandable.

Hopefully, he’s able to dig into what made him great in the first place as we begin the countdown to fight night.
