Canelo Alvarez set for elbow surgery that will delay boxing return
Boxing sensation Canelo Alvarez is set to be on the shelf for longer than he would’ve desired as he is reportedly undergoing elbow surgery.
Throughout the course of his career, Canelo Alvarez has been recognized for what he is – a generational talent. The Mexican star is easily one of the faces of boxing, and beyond that, he has the kind of fanbase that most boxers can only dream of. He has fought and beaten some of the very best of his generation and during his run, he has only suffered three defeats at the professional level to Floyd Mayweather, Dmitry Bivol and Terence Crawford.
The latter of those three losses for Canelo Alvarez, against Crawford, came recently in one of the biggest superfights in recent memory. Despite the notable size difference between the two men, it was ‘Bud’ who was able to get his hand raised when it was all said and done. While it wasn’t the end of the world for Canelo, this news seems to indicate that there was some kind of lasting impact from their battle.
Unfortunately, for those hoping to see him compete sooner rather than later, it doesn’t appear as if that’ll be the case.
Canelo Alvarez set for spell on the shelf
The report suggests that, originally, Canelo was hoping to return to the ring at some point in February 2026. Unfortunately, that will likely now be delayed until mid-to-late 2026, which is a real blow for a fighter who has proudly been one of the most active ‘superstars’ of his era.
They say in sport that absence makes the heart grow fonder and for Canelo, this could prove to be a blessing in disguise for him. He can rebuild, grow, and when he does get back in the squared circle, he’ll be fresh and ready for his next blockbuster showdown.
