Freddie Roach, the coach of Callum Walsh, believes the Irishman will be a world champion within the next year.

Walsh is set for his ninth professional fight on Thursday night as he faces Ismael Villarreal. Although it’s not a top-ranked opponent, Roach, who has coached some Hall of Fame boxers knows Walsh is the real deal.

“He’s definitely getting ready [to fight] a top-10 guy,” Freddie Roach told BoxingScene.com. “And somewhere in the next year, he will be a world champion. I’m going fast with him because he welcomes it.”

Callum Walsh is currently 8-0 as a pro with seven of those wins coming by knockout.

Freddie Roach believes Walsh is so good because of his punching and his ability to go to the body. Roach also says Walsh has been dedicated since the beginning to becoming a world champion.

“He’s a very good puncher and he’s starting to sit down on all his shots,” Roach said of Walsh, who is a very effective body puncher. “When he came here he said, ‘I didn’t come here to win a state title. I came here to win a world title.’”

Ultimately, when Callum Walsh makes the walk to the ring on Thursday night, it will be his ninth fight since he turned pro 2021. It’s also his fourth fight this year, which Freddie Roach says is crucial for his development.

“It’s very important,” Roach said in reference to Walsh’s activity. “I love when guys have a lotta fights. I remember by the second year I was a pro I fought 11 times. Activity is the best thing in the world.”
