Josh Warrington Claims He Feels Like He Did Before Kiko Martinez Fight
Josh Warrington thinks he is back to his old self.
Warrington is set to challenge Leigh Wood for his WBA featherweight title fight. To get the title shot, Warrington is coming off a decision loss to Luis Alberto Lopez last time out.
Prior to that, Josh Warrington scored a TKO win over Kiko Martinz to return to the win column after back-to-back fights against Mauricio Lara. Although some are questioning why Warrington got a title shot, he is confident in himself that he is back to his old ways.
โIt feels like normal this time,โ Warrington told 32Red. โThe two fights I had last year, my mindset going into both of them was completely different. Iโd beaten Kiko Martinez before but though he was still very dangerous, I was very, very relaxed all the way through the whole build up. The Lopez fight was different. For four or five weeks before it I was having sleepless nights. It was so much of a mental rollercoaster. I canโt put my finger on why but itโs just how it was. This time around I feel like Iโm back to how I was before Martinez. Iโm very confident. Iโm focused on the job and I just cant wait to get in there now.”
According to Josh Warrington, he says he feels like he is being written off against Leigh Wood and is ready to prove the doubters wrong.
โThis is a familiar feeling to being written off before the fights with Lee Selby and Carl Frampton,โ he said. โMy mindset has certainly matured a lot since then but when people start to write you off and make their own assumptions it motivates me. You know the type of thing, โHeโs seen better daysโ or โHe might be past it blah, blah, blah.โ Look, Leighโs three years older than me and theyโre putting him on a higher pedestal than me. It gets my back up. I canโt explain it enough.
โIโve always thrived off the support of the people who get behind me but as soon as someone says that I canโt do it, something else comes out of me. I want to prove to you that I can. Iโm constantly trying to impress. Iโve carried that energy throughout this camp. There might be a training session when I feel a bit tired or something like that but you just have to think about something that youโve read online or something that youโve heard something say. All of a sudden, youโre pumped and ready to go. Thatโs the mentality Iโve had right through this camp,” Warrington concluded.
