Lamont Roach gives his thoughts on why Gervonta Davis decision wasn’t overturned

Lamont Roach has given his thoughts on why the split decision draw against Gervonta Davis wasn’t overturned upon appeal.
As we know, Lamont Roach took Gervonta Davis to the limit in their recent outing. They went blow for blow and in the eyes of many, Lamont did enough to get his hand raised. However, in the end, it was ruled a split decision draw – but the real controversy came from what went down in the ninth round.
After being on the receiving end of a Lamont Roach jab, we saw Gervonta Davis opt to take a knee. Under normal boxing rules, that would seem to count as a knockdown for Roach – however, the referee decided against counting it as such.
After the appeal didn’t lead to the result being overturned, Lamont Roach addressed the subject during a recent podcast appearance.
Lamont Roach discusses Gervonta David controversy
“So the real reason was, if it had been scored a knockdown, there’s no definite outcome of how Gervonta would have responded or fought with the remaining rounds to go. What I took from that is basically ‘yeah, we messed up, but somebody gotta take the fall’ and it ain’t gonna be him, so they owned up to it like ‘alright, we missed this’, they owned up to it but they’re just saying ‘alright, we’re not gonna overturn it though’.”

For Roach, he’s gearing up for a potential rematch in the summer as he aims to prove once and for all that he is the better man. For Davis, he’ll consider this to be a real let-off moment. Now, he can try and prepare a different gameplan, and hope to implement one that’s going to put the result in no doubt.
Either way, plenty of people will be tuning in to see these guys run it back.
