Leigh Wood gets stopped in hometown by Anthony Cacace

Leigh Wood, Anthony Cacace

Hometown hero Leigh Wood suffered a stoppage defeat last night in his hometown of Nottingham, England as he fell short against Anthony Cacace.

For both Leigh Wood and Anthony Cacace, this was about proving at the age of 36 that they still have what it takes to compete at the elite level in professional boxing. It was a tight affair and throughout most of the fight, it seemed as if it could swing either way. Alas, that all came crumbling down for Wood as Cacace got the job done with Leigh’s corner actually throwing in the towel.

For the Belfast native, this is the kind of victory that will be remembered long after he hangs up his gloves. For Leigh Wood, however, this is a significant blow, and it leaves many wondering what exactly is next for him in the sport of boxing. Some believe he’ll retire, whereas others feel as if he has at least one or two more fights left in the tank.

Leigh Wood loses to Anthony Cacace

Leigh Wood started the fight well and seemed to be feeding off of the atmosphere from the crowd – but as time went on, Cacace continued to crack him until the breakthrough finally came in the ninth round. As always tends to be the case, Wood showed a great deal of heart and determination – but it simply wasn’t enough to make up for the power coming back in his direction.

Blood began to pour from the nose of Anthony Cacace in the eighth round but if anything, that just seemed to wake him up. He was able to come on strong and really assert his dominance on the contest and in the end, Wood’s corner simply couldn’t witness their man taking any more damage.

All in all, it was a fight that more than lived up to the hype.
