Canelo Alvarez Would Still Rather Not Face Fellow Mexican Talents
WBC, Ring Magazine, and WBA super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez still holds a firm stance on not wanting to face another Mexican fighter.
The last time he fought a fellow Mexican was back in 2017 when he battered Julio Cesar Chavez Jr to a unanimous decision victory. Before that, his most recent bout against a Mexican was against Alfredo Angulo, who he TKO’d in round 10 just after his defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
There is however another Mexican talent that’d like to face Canelo in the future, undefeated middleweight contender Jaime Munguia. This kid is a 24-year-old stud that boasts a record of 36-0 with 29 knockouts.
Canelo isn’t ruling out the possibility of facing Munguia, but he doesn’t see it happening this year to say the least.
Canelo had the following to say on the matter to TV Azteca: “I represent Mexico and I do not like to fight with Mexicans, I do not see any sense in doing that.
“Jaime Munguia has potential but he still has some fights to go (through) before he reaches this level. I am not closing the door to anything, but for now I would not like (to fight another Mexican).”
Canelo also doesn’t believe he’ll be going back to light-heavyweight, which he did in 2019 against knockout artist Sergey Kovalev, finishing him off in round 11 via TKO to become the WBO light-heavyweight champion.
Canelo had the following to say on that as well: “Eddy doesn’t want us to go up to 175 lbs again, it’s giving away a lot of advantages. I want to go for all the titles in the division (super-middleweight, 168 lbs), that’s the goal and we’ll see what happens next.”
Canelo returns to the ring next month on February 27, just over two months since his last bout against formerly undefeated Callum Smith, to face mandatory challenger Avni Yildirim.
Canelo Alvarez: “I would have loved to fight in Mexico, but unfortunately, it cannot happen to Covid-19. We hope we can make it happen in the future. The idea is to fill a stadium, and as time progresses, we will see what happens.”
