Canelo: Billy Joe Saunders Is The Last Person To Talk About Doping

Canelo

Billy Joe Saunders asked Canelo if he likes “Mexican beef” as they stood face to face for the first time on Wednesday.

The Englishman was of course, referring to Canelo’s clenbuterol ordeal in 2018.

In the moment, Alvarez didn’t really acknowledge the dig. Speaking to reporters following their press conference at Live! by Loews, a hotel near AT&T Stadium, Canelo said Saunders is the last person who should be referencing doping.

“He’s the last person to be talking about doping. We know that he’s had problems with that in the past. We all know about the meat. We know what happened, and he’s the last person to speak on that.” (Transcribed by Boxing Scene)

Alvarez has consistently stated that eating contaminated meat in Mexico caused him to test positive for clenbuterol twice in February 2018. The 31-year-old ultimately faced a ban that caused a four-month postponement to his rematch with Gennadiy Golovkin.

The reason Canelo say Saunders shouldn’t talk about doping is because the WBO super middleweight champion has also failed a drugs test.

Saunders failed to get a license from the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission ahead of his middleweight title fight against Demetrius Andrade, which was scheduled for October 2018.

‘BJS’ tested positive for oxilofrine, which is on VADA’s list of banned substances.

Due to the failed test Saunders relinquished his title which was won by Andrade who still holds the belt today..

British promoter, Frank Warren, later claimed that a nasal spray Saunders used caused him to test positive for oxilofrine which is only prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency and UK Anti-Doping on fight day. Therefore, Saunders faced no punishment and quickly captured a world title at super middleweight.

Do you agree with Canelo? Should Billy Joe Saunders stop talking about doping considering his own history of failing drug tests?
