David Benavidez Tests Positive For COVID-19, Jose Uzcategui Fight Postponed

The boxing gods have decided to be cruel in recent weeks as David Benavidez vs. Jose Uzcategui is the latest fight to get called off.

Benavidez was set to headline an August 28 Showtime event against Uzcategui in a featured super middleweight bout.

However, it was reported Wednesday that the former WBC super middleweight champion had tested positive for COVID-19 and would no longer be competing.

The fight is expected to be rescheduled.

“Sources: David Benavidez, ESPN’s No. 2 super middleweight, has tested positive for COVID, postponing the former champion’s Aug. 28 main event on Showtime vs. Jose Uzcategui.”

Benavidez last competed in March when he TKO’d Ronald Ellis in a dominant performance. He remains undefeated at 23-0.

Uzcategui, meanwhile, is on a two-fight winning streak. The former IBF super middleweight champion was looking to get back into title contention with a big win over Benavidez.

For now, both fighters will have to wait it out as it’s been an unfortunate year for boxing events.
