Devin Haney wins dull return fight against Jose Ramirez

Devin Haney

Devin Haney returned to winning ways for the first time in nearly 18 months on Friday night as he picked up a unanimous decision win over Jose Ramirez in Times Square.

As we know, last year, Devin Haney was defeated by Ryan Garcia in New York City. While it was overturned to a no contest, many fans still see it as a legitimate defeat for Haney – even though it’ll never be registered as that on his official record. On Friday night, he finally made his return to the ring on a card that also featured Garcia in the main event.

While Ryan Garcia was defeated by Rolly Romero, Devin Haney managed to get the job done and defeat Jose Ramirez. However, while the record books will show that he picked up his 32nd win in professional boxing, there’s a whole lot more to the story than that

The bottom line is this: Devin Haney did not look great in this fight. While you could certainly put it down to ring rust, there was a ‘boring’ element to this contest, which is something that nobody wants to see at the elite level.

Devin Haney wins – but at what cost?

In addition to winning in a fashion that was hardly spectacular, Ryan Garcia’s defeat means that the big money rematch – and a chance at revenge – is off the table for now. Devin Haney may not care all too much about that but if you look at it purely from a marketability standpoint, his stock has taken a dramatic hit.

Sure, Devin Haney will continue to be involved in big fights for as long as he decides to compete in professional boxing. With that being said, you have to wonder how much traction there’s going to be if this is the level we can expect.
