Floyd Mayweather Jr. thinks there is too many belts and champions in boxing and it is bad for the sport.

The undefeated boxer went on a rant during an interview to promote his pupil, Tank Davis’ upcoming fight, and was asked about champions in boxing. For Mayweather Jr., he says it makes boxing look bad as basically everyone is a champion.

“There is too many champions in the sport of boxing right now, too many champions,” Mayweather Jr. began. “There is no such thing as a super champion, not at all. I’m not taking anything away from no fighter. There are just too many belts.

“Let me tell the people about what is going on in the sport of boxing. Why are there so many titles and so many different belts? People don’t know, for every belt you win, they have to pay a sanctioning fee,” he added. “If a fighter wins an interim belt he has to pay a sanctioning fee. If a fighter has just the regular belt, he has to pay a sanctioning fee, if a fighter is a super champion, he has to pay a sanctioning fee. This not good for the sport of boxing. Every fighter is a champion now. Belts are now like winning an amateur trophy, everyone is a champion, everyone has a belt.

“I don’t want to knock no fighter. I’m just tired of seeing fighters after the fight that everyone has got a championship belt. They’re like trophies,” Mayweather Jr. concluded. “The WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO, you gotta clean this sh*t up, you have to clean this up. It’s bad for boxing. There ain’t no such thing as a super champion. You guys are just taking extra money from all these fighters getts extra money from sanctioning fees.”

This has been a complaint from fans for years and it is good to see Floyd Mayweather Jr. say something about. Whether or not anything will change is to be seen.
