Gervonta Davis: I’ll Break Vasiliy Lomachenko In Nine Or Ten Rounds

Gervonta Davis

Lightweight champion Gervonta Davis has predicted he’ll break down pound-for-pound king Vasiliy Lomachenko inside ten rounds when they eventually fight. Davis made the claim while speaking with WBA president Gilberto Mendoza in a recent interview, he said.

“I see myself breaking him down during the, probably about the ninth, 10th round. I see myself breaking him down. It’s not too many people out there that can, you know, stand toe-to-toe [with] me, especially at 130 or 135. I don’t see nobody standing toe-to-toe with me.”

Davis-Lomachenko Unlikely This Year

While the fight is one which fight fans have long desired it doesn’t seem to be on the table for 2020. Once boxing returns from this enforced hiatus ‘Tank’ is expected to drop down in weight to 130lbs to challenge Leo Santa Cruz. The pair will headline a Showtime pay-per-view event, although a date and venue are yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, Lomachenko will face Teofimo Lopez in a lightweight unification fight that was originally scheduled to take place on May 30 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Unfortunately the ongoing global pandemic has scuppered those plans.

For Davis, it’s all about fighting to biggest and best names in and around his weight division. Lomachenko, Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney are all on the ‘Tank’ Davis hitlist, he explained.

“If we can make it happen, it could be all of ‘em, to be honest. Not no specific fighter. It could be all of ‘em. I’m willing to fight all of ‘em. … It’s gotta be on the right time, right money-wise and things like that. But I’m all for it.”

Regardless of when he actually takes these big fights Davis is content in the knowledge that he is already one of the best boxers on the planet.

“Not to be cocky, but I think I’m probably one of the top skillful fighters that fight on TV now, besides Canelo, Pacquiao, I wanna say Errol [Spence] and Terence [Crawford], things like that. But I feel like I have enough skills to be one of them top guys.” (Transcribed by Boxing Scene)
