Jake Paul Explains Why He Chose Boxing Over MMA

YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul has explained why he decided to go with the sweet science over MMA for his combat sports fix.

Paul has been making a name for himself in the world of boxing. It began with a pro boxing match against fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib. Paul won that bout via TKO and went on to knock out former NBA star Nate Robinson. The Internet sensation took things a step further, stopping former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder Ben Askren via first-round TKO.

This Sunday night (Aug. 29), Paul will share the ring with former UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley. It’ll be an eight-round cruiserweight boxing match.

While Paul has no problem boxing MMA fighters, competing inside the cage is another story. Speaking to Luke Thomas and Brian Campbell of Showtime, Paul revealed why he chose boxing over MMA (via BoxingScene.com).

“Nothing against MMA fighters. I respect MMA fighters. You know, if I go into an MMA fight, they’re gonna tie me up and choke me out. AJ Agazarm, we did an MMA little mess around, and he choked me out. OK, cool, you got me, bro. But in sparring boxing, that’s my territory. You’re coming in where I’m going and it’s different.”

Paul went on to say that boxing and MMA are two different worlds.

“Boxers are a little bit more efficient with striking. They add up the numbers, they have the head movement, and so it’s a different thing. And I’ve taken on a lot of MMA fighters in sparring. But you know, it’s just the name of the game. It’s like a fish out of water. It’s comparing apples to oranges.”
