Michael Conlan Wants Olympic Gold Medal After Evidence Found His Defeat Was Rigged

Michael Conlan wants his gold medal in boxing.

It was recently revealed that a report led by Professor Richard McLaren who was commissioned by the sport’s world governing body AIBA found evidence of corruption and bout manipulation at the 2016 Olympics.

Approximately 11 boxing bouts were deemed as suspicious — including Joe Joyce’s defeat to Tony Yoka — and Conlan’s controversial split decision defeat to Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin was among them.

Many were outraged with the result at the time, but none more so than Conlan himself.

And after this latest revelation, he hopes justice is served and that he gets his gold medal.

“I’m going to be honest, the news today was a shock…I thought it was all put to bed, it was finished, and nothing was going to happen,” he told Reuters. “But here we are five years later, and probably coming to a final close, which is great.

“I’m delighted and I hope that justice will be served. It shows that my reactions and my actions during the time were just, and now, hopefully, I’ll have a bit of vindication by the end of this.”

Conlan is certainly in a position to be making demands.

“I want my medal, that is when I feel that justice will be done, when they send me that medal in the post. I’ll even go to Switzerland if they will hand me it there.

“And also if they can take away the 10,000 Swiss Francs they charged me with because of my reaction at the Games, I’ll be happy too. And then a wee apology wouldn’t go amiss.”
