Oleksandr Usyk plays down age concerns

Undisputed heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk has played down any concerns about his age ahead of his rematch against Daniel Dubois.

Tonight, with the lights shining bright at Wembley Stadium in London, 38-year-old Oleksandr Usyk will put his undisputed heavyweight title on the line against 27-year-old Daniel Dubois. While many believe that Usyk is largely the favorite to pick up his second win over the Englishman, many have noted that Dubois has improved a great deal in the years since their last encounter.

In addition to that, Oleksandr Usyk is now 38 years of age. While heavyweights seem to age a bit slower than most in combat sports, there’s no denying that Usyk is heading towards the twilight of his career. If there was ever going to be an opportunity for someone to knock him off, this is it.

Daniel Dubois is going to come with everything he’s got this evening in an attempt to secure the biggest victory of his career. He’s knocked out Anthony Joshua, and now he’s ready to do the same thing to Oleksandr Usyk. The reigning champion, however, doesn’t appear to buy into the idea that his age will be a significant factor.

“I respect this young guy,” Usyk said.

“He [Dubois] is motivated but I am too. I am not an old guy – 38 is not old. We will see.”

Dubois, of course, is as focused as someone in his position can be right now.

“Right now I just want to get it on,” Dubois said.

“I’m going to write my own script. They’ve got their script and I’ll write my own. I’m going to win these belts and I’m going to be the man.”
