Oleksandr Usyk’s Promoter Admits The Champ Feared Tyson Fury Was Going To Lose Decision To Francis Ngannou

Oleksandr Usyk was worried Tyson Fury was going to lose a decision to Francis Ngannou.

Back at the end of October, Fury was fighting Ngannou in a bout many expected him to cruise to a win. However, the fight was very competitive and Ngannou even dropped Fury.

But, when the final bell rang not many knew who would win, and according to Alex Krassyuk, Oleksandr Usyk was nervous until the scores were read.

“Can you imagine [if he lost]? Usyk was sweating throughout the fight because there was a chance for Tyson to lose. If he lost, who would watch this fight [Fury vs Usyk]? This [Ngannou] fight didn’t seem to be a big success in the US. A couple of hours ago, I saw the reports from the pay-per-views in the US,” Krassyuk told Daily Mail’s ‘The Hook’ podcast (h/t BoxingScene).

“So this was the fight that did not bring that much attention. But I think it’s going to be completely different when he fights Usyk. Usyk has always been confident in what he does. Otherwise, there is no space for him in boxing.  I mean, he became the undisputed cruiserweight and he went to run for the undisputed heavyweight race. And well, that’s where he is now and he has just one belt left,” Krassyuk said.

With Tyson Fury getting the win, Oleksandr Usyk and the Brit’s unified heavyweight title fight became official. However, it won’t come to fruition on Dec. 23 and instead will happen in February.

“It could be February and I would very much like it to be February,” Usyk told Reuters. “I was ready to fight on the 23rd but since Fury got some injuries in the last fight, a knockdown, then probably it will be postponed to next year.

“I’ll just do more technical work. Technically, nothing changes. I just have a little more time for some additional tasks, and that’s it. I don’t think about Tyson Fury at all … I think about myself, about my team, about my family. I don’t need to think about my opponent. I just need to be with him, fight and that’s it,” Usyk continued.
