Ryan Garcia Opens Up About Split From Eddy Reynoso
Ryan Garcia will no longer be coached by Eddy Reynoso and the undefeated fighter explained why.
Garcia is set to return to the ring against Emmanuel Tagoeย but on February 11, Garcia named Joe Goossen his new head trainer and announced his split from Reynoso. Now, 10 days later, the former WBC interim champ revealed Reynoso didn’t have time to train him.
โEddy didnโt have the time to work 100%. Heโs a very busy trainer, and I understand,โ Garcia told ESNews (via BoxingScene). โSometimes you have to make your change for the better. Itโs nothing against him. Heโs a good trainer. I won five fights with him by knockout, so thereโs nothing wrong. Iโm going to another level, and I need a full-on, 100% [trainer]. It was never bad blood. It was about dedication and time, you know?โ
For Ryan Garcia, at this stage of his career, he says he needs someone who is solely focused on himself. Garcia also had nothing but praise for Goossen after his first week of training with him.
โItโs amazing,โ Garcia said. โJoe is a very dedicated trainer 24/7, watching all my mistakes if I make any and correcting them. Heโs on top of them at all times. He doesnโt just see my talent because a lot of people would be just like, โdamn, heโs so quick, heโs so fast.โ But Joe, he has it down to what I need to work on. Iโm always open-eared and here to listen. You know me. Iโm dedicated and always ready to go. I train from pretty much from six oโclock [a.m.] to nine oโclock at night every day. Itโs more than a nine to five. It’s six to nine.โ
However, along with those reasons, Ryan Garcia’s father, Henry explained to Boxingscene.com ย his son wanted to strike out on his own because he wanted independence, his own gym, and to build a better brand.
โI think itโs time. Itโs like when you have an apartment โ you get tired of renting and you want your own place. Itโs almost like that. The main thing is that Ryan did not want to feel that he was, you know, in somebody elseโs, you know, he felt that his brand can hold up, just like Floyd Mayweather Jr. when Mayweather decided to move away from Top Rank and start his own thing. Itโs almost the same thing. He just didnโt want to feel confined to one area where you have to wait until they decide to work out and this and that. We donโt want that. We want to have our own place, and whatโs wrong with that?
โRyan is becoming a strong man and making his own decisions. Thatโs the bottom line, and we have to respect that. Heโs not a kid anymore. He wants to make his own decisions, and itโs not a bad decision. Weโre still in contact with everybody [at Team Canelo].
โWe have love for Canelo, Eddy, and the team,โ said Henry. โThey are beautiful and awesome people. I canโt emphasize that enough. We respect them and there are no hard feelings at all. We thank them for all of their assistance and are appreciative for everything theyโve done, but I guess when you know we have to make some changes, thatโs something thatโs decided.โ
