Ryan Garcia vs. Luke Campbell ‘Likely’ To Be Rescheduled For December 19

Ryan Garcia

Ryan Garcia and Luke Campbell will still fight before the year is up.

Garcia and Campbell were supposed to fight on December 5 but Campbell tested positive for COVID-19. Immediately, both sides wanted the fight to be rebooked and Oscar De La Hoya told The Athletic the fight is likely to take place on December 19. They will still compete for the interim WBC lightweight title.

Ryan Garcia is a perfect 20-0 as a pro and one of the most marketable stars in boxing. At 22-years-old he has a massive social media and YouTube following as he is often hanging out with influencers. In his career, he has notable wins over Francisco Fonseca and Romero Duno. But, Campbell will no doubt be his toughest test of his career.

Luke Campbell, meanwhile, is 20-3 and coming off a decision loss to Vasyl Lomachenko by unanimous decision for the WBA, WBO, WBC, and The Ring lightweight title. His other two losses came at the hands of Jorge Linares and Yvan Mendy. The Englishman does hold notable wins over Adrian Yuang, Mendy, and Derry Matthews.

This is a massive fight for the lightweight division as if Garcia wins, it could set up fights with Devin Haney, Teofimo Lopez, and Tank Davis. Yet, for the 22-year-old he believes he would be the A-side in any of those matchups.

“They need me,” continued Garcia. “Whether they like it or not, they all need to fight me if they wanna get to a Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather type of fight,” Garcia said (via DAZN). “They can say they are the A-side but if you look at my numbers, they’re way better. My numbers are so far past Tank’s numbers and he gets loved by everybody! I’m ahead of him.  I’m calling him out not because I need him but because it’s the biggest fight available.

“I like Gervonta, there’s a specialness about him. I give credit where credit’s due. He does amazing things,” he continued. “He’s fighting the fighters he knows he can beat, with no threat there. Against Tank I wouldn’t be the favourite for the first time. I live for that. I’m trying to shock the world. That’s what I’m trying to do.”

In order to get those fights, Ryan Garcia needs to get past Luke Campbell.
