Oscar De La Hoya Says Chavez Sr. Didn’t Pass Torch To Canelo Alvarez

Oscar De La Hoya doesn’t believe Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. passed the torched to Canelo Alvarez.

Chavez Sr. returned for an exhibition bout in Mexico on June 19 and at the event was Alvarez. His older brother, Ramon Alvarez, saw action on the undercard as well as the event being in his hometown so it wasn’t surprising that he was there. Yet, many thought it was a passing of the torch event for Mexican boxing but De La Hoya says that’s not true.

“I know Julio Cesar Chavez and I know he didn’t mean that,” said De La Hoya to Fino Boxing (via boxingscene). I know Chavez, he is my compadre. I don’t believe it. I think that in terms of passing the torch, that fighter hasn’t been born yet from Mexico. Those are very big shoes to fill. I know Chavez. Honestly, I know he didn’t say that.”

Canelo Alvarez has said Chavez Sr. will always be the greatest Mexican boxer of all time so perhaps it wasn’t the passing of the torch. Yet, as Alvarez continues to win more fights and win more titles, he will have a compelling case for that crown.

Alvarez is rumored to be fighting Caleb Plant sometime later this year. After that, it has been rumored he would move up in weight again to try and become a champ in another weight class.

Chavez Sr. meanwhile, won’t fight again after his last fight in June.

Do you think Canelo Alvarez is the greatest Mexican boxer of all time?
