Amanda Serrano Explains Why She’s Vacating WBC Title

Amanda Serrano

Amanda Serrano has decided to vacate her WBC featherweight title.

Serrano made the surprise announcement on Monday evening as she says she refuses to fight for a sanctioning body that won’t allow women to fight the same amount of time as men.

“Moving forward, if a sanctioning body doesn’t want to give me and my fellow fighters the choice to fight the same as the men, then I will not be fighting for that sanctioning body,” Serrano stated late Monday evening (h/t BoxingScene). “The WBC has refused to evolve the sport for equality. So, I am relinquishing their title.”

The Puerto Rican has been pushing for women to be able to fight three 12-minute rounds like the men do, but the WBC has been reluctant for that.

Amanda Serrano was able to fight a 12-round, three-minute fight against Danila Ramos but the WBC refused to sanction it. With that, Serrano says she won’t be fighting for the WBC anymore.

“I love boxing. I have given my life to this sport,” stated Serrano. “No phone, no boyfriend, no parties. Just boxing. I am the only boxer, male or female, from Puerto Rico to become undisputed champion. I am the only female boxer to have won titles in 7 divisions. I am the first female boxer, along with Katie to headline Madison Sqaure Garden. I am the first female boxer to make 7 figures from a fight and the same from sponsors. And I am the first undisputed female champion to fight 12×3 minute rounds.”

Amanda Serrano is 46-2-1 and coming off a decision win over Danila Ramos back in October. She’s currently on a four-fight win streak and also holds notable wins over Heather Hardy, Erika Cruz, and Sarah Mahfoud.
