Billy Joe Saunders Looks to Cement His Legacy By Beating Canelo
WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders is hoping he will cement his boxing legacy by beating Saul โCaneloโ Alvarez on May 8.
The Mexican has been booked to fight โBJSโ for some time but the bout was not made official until Canelo beat Anvi Yildirim last night.
Alvarez dominated his overwhelmed opponent from the first bell. He dropped Yildirim in the third round and the Turkish fighters corner threw in the towel before round four could begin.
A fight between Canelo and Saunders was quickly announced post-fight.
โBJSโ was delighted to have reached this point and insisted he is the man to beat the pound-for-pound superstar.
โCanelo, Iโm ready to rock and roll,โ Saunders said. โYou have to dare to be great and you arenโt going to be a great if you donโt beat the greats. I believe I am the only one with the footwork, knowhow, skillset, mindset and brain to unlock that door in Canelo.
โHeโs the main man in the sport and the face of boxing. You have to give him respect, he hasnโt ducked anyone, heโs beaten good names, but nobody is unbeatable, and I believe I have got the tools to beat him if I use them properly and if the game plan comes off that I believe works.
โI am looking at the golden ticket to cement my legacy, and thatโs how you have to go in there to beat him. Iโve won everything from Southern Area to World titles, I could say โIโve won it all, been to the Olympics, Iโm unbeaten – Iโll see you laterโ. But Iโve only just turned 31, Iโve got no miles on the clock, havenโt taken any punishment – I believe heโs been in harder fights than me and has more miles, so I want to cement my legacy and beat him.โ (Transcribed by Boxing Scene)
