Canelo Alvarez Says He Needs To Rest, Eyes May Return

Canelo Alvarez is looking to take a couple of months off before he returns to the ring.

On Saturday night in Las Vegas, Alvarez scored an 11th-round TKO over Caleb Plant to become the undisputed super-middleweight champion. It was a phenomenal performance that capped off three fights this year and four since December of 2020. With that, the Mexican says his body needs rest so he won’t be back until May.

“In May because my body needs rest. I need to rest. I need to recover. So, it’s probably gonna be May when I come back,” Alvarez said after his win over Plant (via Boxingscene).

Who Alvarez fights in his return is uncertain. He could look to defend his titles or go up to another weight class and try to win more belts, which he has done in the past. Regardless, for Canelo Alvarez, all he cared about on Saturday night was the win as he didn’t care to look to what’s ahead.

“The wear and tear really is during the training sessions, trying to make weight,” Alvarez said. “That’s when you feel really the tiredness of it all. But right now, if I have to tell you, I feel a hundred percent. My body is responding splendidly. And all I need now is some rest until May, and then we will go on to the next challenge.”

With the TKO win over Caleb Plant, Canelo Alvarez is now 57-1-2 as a pro and on an eight-fight winning streak and a 16-fight unbeaten streak as he has a draw to Gennady Golovkin in there. Although he has looked dominant as of late, this win over Plant was special as many thought this would be a tough test but Alvarez ran through him and got the stoppage win.
