Devin Haney is embracing villain role ahead of boxing return

Devin Haney

Devin Haney has said that he’s embracing his current role as a villain ahead of his boxing return on May 2 against Jose Ramirez.

For the longest time, Devin Haney was seen as the next big thing in the world of professional boxing. Then, seemingly in the blink of an eye, he was at the top of the mountain – proving that the pundits and the experts were right to believe that he had what it took to get to the next level.

However, in his last outing against Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney was defeated. While that loss has been overturned to a no contest since fight night, it doesn’t remove the fact that he was dropped multiple times and beaten fairly comprehensively. Because of that, he’s hungry to prove that he still has what it takes to compete against the best of the best.

Ahead of his return to action against Jose Ramirez in just under two months, Devin Haney made it clear that he doesn’t mind being the villain in the eyes of the fans.

Devin Haney is okay with villain status

“I always wanted to be the villain.. I’m okay with being the villain,” said Devin Haney to Ring Magazine, putting a positive spin on him being hated by many fans and being booed at Monday’s press conference in Los Angeles.

“It’s easier being the villain and it pays being the villain. That’s when Floyd [Mayweather] became a star when he became the villain. I think that’s where I become a massive star now that I’m crossing over. People want to see me lose now.

“They want to pay to see me lose. So. I’m happy. I was a good guy, but I was really a villain. I was secretly the bad guy, but I was acting like the guy,” said Haney.
