Dmitry Bivol Is ‘Frontrunner’ For Canelo Alvarez After Caleb Plant Negotiations Fail

We could be in store for Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol.

Alvarez looked set to face Caleb Plant in a super middleweight title unification bout set for September 18.

That was until negotiations recently broke off after various disagreements between the two parties.

As things stand, Alvarez will either fight on that same date against a different opponent or look to revive talks with Plant later in the year.

If it’s the former, WBA light heavyweight champion Bivol is a frontrunner to face Alvarez according to the latter’s promoter Eddie Hearn.

“There’s been some discussions with Dmitry Bivol,” Hearn said (via DAZN). “Over the last few weeks, that’s a good fight. 175 pounds, you know, there’s other options.

“He’s constantly for the champions, and you’re 175lbs. Joe Smith, you got [Artur] Beterbiev, but I think Bivol would be that frontrunner. You know, he was certainly a guy that I put forward again.”

Alvarez against either Bivol or Beterbiev would be a treat to see. The Mexican already moved up to 175 pounds in 2019 when he knocked out former champion Sergey Kovalev.

However, Bivol and Beterbiev would likely be much bigger obstacles to get past.

Who do you want to see Alvarez face next?
