Gennady Golovkin Believes His Power Will Translate To 168lbs
Gennady Golovkin is confident his power will translate to 168lbs when he faces Canelo Alvarez in the trilogy match.
The two are set to meet on September 17 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada as it will be the first time Golovkin moves up in weight in his career. Although it is a new challenge for GGG, he says he is comfortable at the weight.
โIt is the same. I feel absolutely comfortable. For me, Iโll be honest with you, itโs just another fight โ just another opponent. Iโve been asking myself, โdo I feel different?โ The answer is โno.โ I feel 100% comfortable even in a new weight division,โ Golovkin told BoxingScene.com.
Along with the fact Gennady Golovkin won’t have to cut as much weight, he is confident his power will be harder at 168 is excited to prove that.
โWeโll see. I believe so. But weโll be in a new situation. We need to try ourselves out,โ said Golovkin.ย “Itโs hard for me to say right now because this will be my first time fighting at 168. Weโre going to prepare and do everything we can to get ready for the weight class, but no predictions. Fighting at 160 has its pros and cons, and of course, 168 wonโt be as tough to make… Boxers at this level are really hard punchers. You donโt realize how hard it is until you get punched. I donโt know Canelo at 168. I know him at 160. There is a reason this fight is not at 160. I learned something about him. He learned something about himself at 160. Now weโre going to try at 168.โ
Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez met in Septembr of 2017 and 2018 with the first fight being a draw and the rematch being a majority decision win for Alvarez. Yet, both fights were super close and many thought GGG should’ve gotten his hand raised.
How do you think Gennady Golovkin will fare at 168lbs?
