Jake Paul Explains Why He’s Earned A Fight With Canelo Alvarez

Jake Paul has been vocal about the fact he will fight Canelo Alvarez one day and now he believes he has earned a fight with the Mexican.

Paul, the former Disney star turned YouTuber turned boxer, is set to rematch Tyron Woodley in the main event of a Showtime boxing pay-per-view on Saturday. Should he win that, he’d improve to 5-0 in boxing and Paul believes that should earn him a crack against Alvarez.

“I think he’s great,” Paul said during an interview for In Depth with Graham Bensinger. “I respect him. I think we’ve had words back-and-forth and he says I need to work on my boxing ability, which I agree with of course, 100 percent I do. I’ve really come to like his personality actually,” Paul continued. “I think when he started doing more media, showing his life behind the scenes, he never really had done that before.

“I watched [Bensinger’s interview with Alvarez] and I realised he’s a good guy and maybe in a different lifetime we would probably be friends,” Paul continued. “However, I still want to fight him, I still think it would be a massive fight and I think my path is leading to that.”

Although a fight between Jake Paul and Canelo Alvarez makes zero sense on paper, it would be a massive money fight. Even though many don’t like Paul, he draws eyes on his fights and he claims he will be the second-highest earner in boxing this year just behind Alvarez.

This year, Canelo will be the No.1 highest paid boxer, and I will be No.2,” Paul reasoned. “So what better fight than to put the No.1 highest paid against the No.2 highest paid? That equals the biggest payday, and at the end of the day this is a business, so as much as I respect him, I think three years from now us getting in the ring will be massive and my skill level will be good enough to make it a serious competition.”
