Josh Taylor suffers shock loss to Ekow Essuman
Scottish sensation Josh Taylor was stunned by Ekow Essuman last night as he fell to a defeat in his first fight in the welterweight division.
The expectation was that the 34-year-old Josh Taylor would be in for a tough fight, but that ultimately, he’d be able to survive and pick up the win. Alas, after losses to Teofimo Lopez and Jack Catterall, some wondered whether or not he’d still be able to compete at the elite level – and as it turns out, he fell short.
While the atmosphere was incredible in Glasgow and the fans were right behind him, Josh Taylor just couldn’t quite get things going. It was a really fantastic battle between two impressive fighters, but Essuman was able to bloody Taylor – and from there, he just seemed to gain confidence from the seventh round onwards (after an already positive first half of the bout).
Josh Taylor loses in Glasgow
There’s no denying that Taylor had his moments, but it wasn’t enough to persuade the judges that he should’ve had his hand raised. The scorecards came back and it was read out at 116-113, 116-112 and 115-13. It was tight, but the result seemed fair, and even Josh’s most apssionate fans would probably admit that.
There’s no denying that he’s had some great moments throughout the course of his career but if this result was any indication, it may be his best option to walk away from the squared circle. Obviously, that’s easier said than done, but this was supposed to be his big moment in the sunshine – and he couldn’t quite get over the finish line.
For Essuman, this was one for him to really silence his doubters. He proved that he can hang in enemy territory and for that, he deserves a big fight off the back of this.
