Lennox Lewis Thinks Deontay Wilder Lost His Spark
Former boxing heavyweight world champion Lennox Lewis believes Deontay Wilder lost his spark against Joseph Parker.
Wilder entered his fight against Parker as a sizeable favorite, but the Kiwi dominated the fight for all 12 rounds to win a lopsided decision. After the fight, Wilder admitted he just couldn’t pull the trigger, but Lewis thinks ‘The Bronze Bomber’ wasn’t focused on the fight at all.
โIt looked like to me that Wilder wasnโt even focused on the fight,โ Lewis told The Ring (h/t BoxingScene). โI donโt know what he was focused on, (but) mentally he said it was the money. โThey paid me, I wasnโt really ready but I came out and gave them this for a little money. It doesnโt matter what way it goes, Iโm prepared for a loss, Iโm prepared for a win. Let God decide.โ He lost his spark.
โI think trying to box at this stage is a mental thing for me because there are certain things you are supposed to learn on the way up and when youโve knocked everybody out on the way up, then the mentality becomes if it ainโt broke donโt fix it,” Lewis continued.
Following the loss, Lennox Lewis believes Deontay Wilder needs a new mentor to get him back focused on boxing.
โGet with someone who can make those powerful punches even more lethal by working on other stuff like a great uppercut, a great hook,โ Lewis said. โSurprise them, theyโre looking for the right hand, hit them with an uppercut, a hook. I donโt think he was totally serious with that fight because you can look at the punch stats, and theyโre not close to the (Tyson) Fury fight. This is a lesser man because his weight is not there, his punch count is not up to par, undoubtedly he didnโt take the fight that seriously.โ
As of right now, Deontay Wilder does not have his next fight booked.
