Oscar De La Hoya Expects Canelo Alvarez To Run Through Jermall Charlo, Set Up Munguia Fight In September

Oscar De La Hoya expects to see Canelo Alvarez and Jamie Munguia fighting later this year.

Alvarez is expected to return to the ring on Jermall Charlo on May 4 in an intriguing matchup. The fight has not been made official, but the hope is the bout can get done soon.

“I believe Canelo is gonna fight Charlo I believe in May… So, I’m thinking, OK, Canelo’s gonna walk right through him and hopefully it can set up an all-Mexican showdown for September. We haven’t seen an all-Mexican showdown at an elite level since Erik Morales-[Marco Antonio] Barrera, [Juan Manuel] Marquez, you know? I’m a gringo. I’m a gringo. [Julio Cesar] Chavez-De La Hoya wasn’t considered all-Mexican,” De La Hoya told reporters (h/t BoxingScene).

As Oscar De La Hoya mentions, if Canelo Alvarez does end up fighting and beating Charlo as expected, the promoter hopes to make Alvarez vs. Jamie Munguia.

Munguia is coming off a ninth-round TKO win over John Ryder on Saturday, and De La Hoya believes he’s ready for the challenge of Alvarez.

“I’m excited for Jaime’s future,” De La Hoya. “I’m excited that he did make a statement. And now the possibilities of him fighting the king, which he calls himself, Canelo Alvarez, that’s the fight to make. September, [it] is the fight to make with Canelo Alvarez. And all of you, hopefully, can push that. Everyone can push that. That’s the fight, an all-Mexican showdown in September of this year. Imagine that. Statement made.”

Before any of that can happen, Canelo Alvarez will need to beat Charlo, but the Mexican would be a sizeable favorite to do so.
