Terence Crawford will defend his WBO welterweight title against Shawn Porter on November 20 in Las Vegas.
Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports was the first to report the news of the fight booking. ESPN then confirmed the fight is on for November 20 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The bout will also take place on pay-per-view.
“Porter is without a doubt Crawford’s toughest fight at welterweight, and I think Crawford may be Porter’s toughest fight,” Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti, who was in Puerto Rico for the purse bid, told Yahoo Sports. “This fight … wow. It’s going to be something.”
Terence Crawford (37-0) has been campaigning for a big fight for quite some time to prove he’s the pound-for-pound best and he finally gets it. ‘Bud’ is coming off a dominant TKO win over Kell Brook last November. He also holds notable wins over Amir Khan, Jose Benavidez Jr., Jeff Horn, and Yuriorkis Gamboa. For Crawford, he says he’s ecstatic that the fight got made.
“I’m very excited,” Crawford, 33, told ESPN. “Now I can show my talent and maybe I can show something for the general public, something that they’ve never seen before. Because I don’t believe that I’ve showed them my best yet.”
Shawn Porter (31-3-1) returned to the win column back in August of 2020 as he defeated Sebastian Formella. Prior to that, he lost a split decision to Errol Spence Jr. where he lost his WBC welterweight title. Porter has beaten the likes of Danny Garcia, Andre Berto, Adrien Broner, and Paulie Malignaggi among others.
Porter is also well aware this is a massive fight for his career and his legacy.
“It’s extremely big … experience means nothing if you don’t use it, but my record speaks for itself,” Porter (31-3-1, 17 KOs) told ESPN on Saturday. “Everyone’s seen what I’ve done, every experience that I’ve had, I’ve held onto them and I’ve used them to my advantage.
“When you consider the experience in this fight and me having more experience than Terence Crawford, that is a fact. … When I say the fight between me and Terence Crawford is going to be great, it’s gonna be great,” Porter continued. “When I say I have what it takes to beat him, don’t sleep on that, believe that. I do!”
