After Knockout Victory Over Daniel Geale, Miguel Cotto Wants Canelo Alvarez

Miguel Cotto had New York on their feet Saturday night (June 6, 2015), when he met Daniel Geale at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Cotto got off to a quick start, landing big shots and connecting often over the course of the first three rounds.

Then the fourth round came, where Cotto landed one of his signature left hooks that floored Geale. Knowing he had his opponent hurt, Cotto swarmed Geale landing a barrage of punches and knocking him down again, forcing Geale to tell the referee that he couldn’t continue.

Check out the highlights here.

Extending his record to 40-4, and scoring his 33rd knockout, Cotto is now 3-0 in his last three fights training under legendary coach Freddie Roach. Looking better than ever, there may be some big fights on the horizon for the veteran knockout artist, one in particular against the so-called future star of boxing in Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Alvarez is coming off of a huge knockout win himself over James Kirkland last month (see highlights here) and a potential super fight between “Canelo” and Cotto could be in the works. Speaking with HBO’s Max Kellerman (via The Big Lead) after the fight, Cotto said that he’s all for it. He said that he would like to take some time off with his family and then get right back to training for Alvarez:

“Let’s do it,” Cotto said. “Before that, I want to spend some time with my family and enjoy them again, but then it’s back to L.A. and training for Canelo”

Continuing on, Cotto added that “Canelo” would just be another fight, and if that’s what the fans want, then it will happen:

“Canelo will be just another fight. If the people want that fight to happen, it will happen.”

Unsure of how many big fights are left out there in boxing, this is definitely one that packs some star power. A bout between two of boxing’s best championship level fighters, this would be a fight that would definitely have fans intrigued.

Who would you take? The veteran in Cotto, or boxing’s rising star in “Canelo”?
