Caleb Plant Thinks It’s Disrespectful For Billy Joe Saunders To Be Compared To Him

Plant

IBF super-middleweight champion Caleb Plant believes he’s a completely different fighter than Billy Joe Saunders.

Saunders suffered an eighth-round TKO defeat to Canelo Alvarez this past weekend to lose his WBO super-middleweight crown.

Alvarez is now slated to fight Plant next with the winner unifying the division completely. Of course, it’s hard to pick against Alvarez as he will undoubtedly be a huge favorite going into that fight if it’s booked.

Not if Plant has anything to say about it, though.

โ€œThatโ€™s what he thinks,โ€ Plant said on theย Pug and Copp Boxing Showย about Canelo thinking he will unify the division against him. โ€œYouโ€™re looking at the reason. With Billy [Joe Saunders], I think people misconstrue the fact that maybe because me and Billy have some slickness to our style that weโ€™re the same fighter.”

For many observers, Saunders is on the same level, if not better, than Plant. And given how he ultimately couldn’t cope with the Mexican, Plant’s chances don’t look too good.

But to the American, being compared to Saunders is disrespectful.

โ€œTo me, thatโ€™s almost disrespectful.ย Just the amount of discipline alone that I possess over him is disrespectful,โ€ Plant said. โ€œThe amount of discipline that I have, the athletic ability that I have. Billy, heโ€™s quick, heโ€™s got some quickness, butย heโ€™s not explosive.

โ€œThe height, the real, the boxing ability, the boxing IQ,ย I hit harder than him.ย I mean, the list goes on and on. Just because we both have some slickness to our style, donโ€™t construe that weโ€™re the same boxer or even the same type of man.”

Some big words there.
