Canelo Alvarez’s legacy will be hurt if he loses to Terence Crawford, says Chris Algieri

Terence Crawford, Canelo Alvarez

Chris Algieri is the latest fighter to weigh in on the upcoming Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford fight, suggesting a loss for Canelo would hurt his legacy a lot more than if Crawford falls to a defeat.

Next month, Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford will meet in an absolutely blockbuster superfight. The two will lock horns in the kind of contest that comes around once in a generation, and the expectation is that it’ll be one of the biggest events of all time.

For many, Canelo Alvarez should be seen as the favorite as a result of the size difference between the two. With that being said, Terence Crawford’s natural boxing ability is so good that it’s also possible he could overcome that roadblock and secure the win anyway.

In a recent interview, the aforementioned Chris Algieri gave his thoughts on what this fight means for both Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford.

Chris Algieri on Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford

“The guy may do it, and if he loses, I don’t really think it affects his legacy all that much. All the accomplishments that he already has, Crawford. They’re not going to be forgotten. He’s jumping up two weight classes,” said Chris Algieri to Fight Hub TV, talking about there being no downside for Terence Crawford going up against Canelo Alvarez on September 13th.

“So, I think it’s a win-win, loss-loss situation for these guys. A win-win for Crawford, and a lose-lose for Canelo. That’s a great point made by Crawford. That’s a good way to get under Canelo’s skin,” said Algieri. “Yeah, there is a lot on the line for Canelo because if he loses this, the tarnish on his legacy is massive. He lost to a welterweight. He lost to a lightweight. He was a lightweight world champion.”
