Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol In the Cards For Sept. 18?

Canelo Alvarez Bivol

Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn believes Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol is the fight to make next but is Sept. 18 the right date?

Canelo is the WBA, WBC, WBO, and The Ring Super-Middleweight Champion. He’s just one major title away from undisputed status at 168 pounds. Caleb Plant holds the IBF gold but talks to make a title unification bout happen have fizzled out.

Canelo has said he has no plans of returning to the light-heavyweight division but with the talks of a title unification bout collapsing, the boxing megastar might decide to chase after 175-pound gold again.

Here’s what Hearn said during an interview with iFL TV (h/t Boxing News 24).

“I think Dmitry Bivol’s the fight. He’s ready. We promote him, we’ve spoken to Vadim [Kornilov], his manager, and Andriy Rybinskiy, World Of Boxing, they want the fight, they’ve been looking for that breakout fight for some time.

“I think it’s a really, really good fight, a tough fight. So, we’ll have to see.”

Hearn then said he and Canelo are trying to figure out if Sept. 18 is doable.

“I spoke to Saul last night a couple of times, and we’re just looking to make the and I think the decision is, do we go September 18th? But it’s seven weeks tomorrow, so it’s any day that decision.”

Hearn had told DAZN that Bivol is now the frontrunner to face Canelo. As mentioned in the quote, the promoter says the decision of whether or not to fight on Sept. 18 could come any day now.

Bivol is the current WBA Light-Heavyweight Champion. Many feel that Bivol lacks a signature fight that would boost him into the mainstream. A bout with Canelo would certainly do that, especially if it results in a victory.

As it stands now, Canelo is widely considered to be the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world. He’s only had one loss in his pro boxing career and that was against Floyd Mayweather back in 2013. He has gone 14-0-1 since that fight.
