Luis Ortiz Believes Usyk Is Too Small, Campaigns For Him To Fight Anthony Joshua

Luis Ortiz believes he should be the one to face Anthony Joshua.

After an arbitrator ruled Deontay Wilder was owed the third fight against Tyson Fury, the highly-anticipated bout between Fury and Joshua is off. Now, Joshua is reportedly set to face Oleksandr Usyk sometime in the coming months. However, for Luis Ortiz, he believes he should be the one to box Joshua.

“So now that Joshua versus Fury can’t be done, I feel that me and Joshua would be an explosive fight so Eddie (Hearn), Joshua, Jay (Jimenez), Luis DeCubas Jr, (Al) Haymon – I’m here and I’m ready. Let’s try and make this happen. Why wait? You already have the date. Don’t fight Usyk, he’s too small for you. He is a cruiserweight. Give me a shot. You don’t even have to put your belts on the line,” Ortiz stated to BoxingScene.

Although Ortiz wants to fight Joshua, the WBO has already ordered Joshua’s next opponent to be Usyk. It’s a competitive fight on paper. However, after Ortiz knocked out Alexander Flores in the first round in November, he called out the top of the heavyweight division. Yet, for the 42-year-old, he has been told no by several fighters.

“I have been trying to get in the ring with Dillian Whyte but he refused to fight me so I went to the (Andy) Ruiz versus (Chris) Arreola fight and again I got a no, because Ruiz said he would need another tune-up,” Ortiz said.

For now, it’s uncertain who Luis Ortiz will box next. The top of the division is tied up with Fury-Wilder 3, Joshua-Usyk, Ruiz Jr., and Whyte reportedly turning him down. The goal for the 42-year-old is to get a big fight next time out, but to get that, he may be on the sidelines until those fights happen.
