Mark Breland Responds Again, Says Deontay Wilder Was ‘Untrainable’

Boxing coach Mark Breland has issued a new statement following the comments of former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.

Wilder has continued to blame his seventh-round TKO defeat to Tyson Fury last year on Breland who he claims spiked his water.

It was ludicrous enough when Wilder first came up with the excuse back in November, but the American doubled down on his belief while responding to recent comments from Breland who is no longer his coach. He also added that he felt betrayed by the former champion.

To that, Breland responded with a post on Instagram:

“After Deontay became a name in boxing, new members joined the team and it got to the point where I didn’t even have my fighter’s phone number,” Breland said. “I haven’t spoke to Deontay alone in years. The things that I told Deontay to do had to be ran past Jay [Deas].

“Deontay had become untrainable because he was at the point of, he knows more about boxing than all of us. So teaching a correct jab was not a priority to learn once he continued on his knockout streak. So a coach can only teach someone if they’re willing to learn.”

As for the spiked water accusations? Breland believes the accusation is laughable especially as fighters are tested before and after the fight.

“I never thought anything this insane could take place,” Breland said. “I should not have addressed who had the water because that accusation is so asinine it doesn’t deserve a reply.

“Anyone who knows a tiny bit about boxing knows we’re tested before and after a fight, so that’s the end of that ludicrous allegation.”

Wilder notably first took issue with Breland for throwing in the towel during the fight as he believed he should have gone out on his shield.

But Breland remains adamant he made the right call.

“Lastly, at that fight just as many others we had no cutman because Deontay won’t need it, so I’m not a doctor but I know blood coming out of your ears and & dazed eyes could be a brain issue,” Breland added. “And power comes from your legs and his legs were gone. So I made a decision to stop the fight and I’d do it all again!

“I have a son Deontay’s age. I’m not looking to see him go out on his shield!”
