Tonight’s Top Rank card was going to feature WBO super featherweight champion, Jamel Herring, defending his crown against Jonathan Oquendo. However, the bout has been canceled due to Herring testing positive for Covid-19.
The headline bout will now see Mikaela Mayer (12-0, 5KO) taking on Helen Joseph (17-4-2, 10KO). The 30-year-old Mayer is a former US Olympian, who, along with people like Katie Taylor and Claressa Shields, is part of the new generation of female boxers transforming the sport.
Mayer has been angling for a shot at Terri Harper’s WBC strap and provided she keeps racking up wins a title fight is not too far in the distance. Tonight will be her toughest test as Nigeria’s Joesph. The 31-year-old and has previously challenged for world titles as well as going the distance with Belgium’s Delfine Persoon.
The co-main event sees the return of mixed martial artists turned boxer Clay Collard (7-2-3, 2KO), who meet Lorawnt T Nelson (5-3, 4KO) in a middleweight clash. The 27-year-old Collard was last in action just under a month ago when he defeated rising prospect David Kaminsky. The former UFC fighter was meant to be plying his trade this summer for the MMA promotion PFL, but Coid-19 has forced the company—which operates in a league format— to abandon its 2020 season.
MMA’s loss has been boxing’s gain as Collard is an entertaining albeit scrappy fighter, and tonight’s fight will hopefully live up to expectations.
