Ryan Garcia should look to Rolly Romero rematch instead of Devin haney, says Oscar De La Hoya

Rolly Romero, Ryan Garcia

Oscar De La Hoya believes Ryan Garcia should focus on a rematch with Rolly Romero as opposed to running it back with Devin Haney.

As we know, Ryan Garcia’s night didn’t go to plan in Times Square. He was beaten by Rolly Romero, and his rival Devin Haney won his fight against Jose Ramirez in a pretty underwhelming contest. The interest levels for the rematch, as you can imagine, have taken a dramatic hit, as ‘King’ attempts to bounce back from yet another disappointing setback.

There’s still a lot of potential in Ryan Garcia and where he could go from here, but there’s also a lot of unpredictability in the air when it comes to what his ceiling really is in the sport.

Someone who knows a thing or two about thriving at the elite level is Oscar De La Hoya. In a recent interview, he had the following to say on Ryan’s future and what he should aim to do.

Oscar De La Hoya on Ryan Garciaโ€™s future

โ€œDevin actually lost in winning [against Jose Ramirez on May 2nd]. His stock is super down,โ€ said Oscar. โ€œPeople are talking about him just being a runner, not a boxer. This guy [Haney] is a runner. Why would I want to see that?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s exactly what I would do,โ€ said Oscar about taking the rematch with Rolly Romero if he were still fighting. โ€œSo, that would be the right move for him. Go get revenge. So, might as well.โ€

Ryan Garcia, at the age of just 26, may well have his best years ahead of him in the world of professional boxing. Alas, he needs to make sure he gets out of his own way, or he’ll be left with a whole lot of wasted potential.
