WBC and IBF Welterweight Champion Errol Spence Jr is still very much interested in a fight with Super WBA Welterweight Champion Manny Pacquiao.
Spence first needs to get past his mandatory challenger in Danny Garcia on December 5 before this said bout has a chance of happening, and that’s no easy task.
Pacquiao hasn’t fought since his WBA championship winning effort against Keith Thurman back in July of 2019. That marked the fourth decade he has won a world title, which is pretty insane when you think about it.
Spence may never get the chance to face the Filipino legend however, as Pacquiao may end up facing Conor McGregor in 2021 in his potential swan song.
The 30-year-old champion had the following to say about this potential match up:
“”After this fight, of course I would like to fight Manny Pacquiao. He’s on his way out so I’d love to have that fight. He’s a living legend, and I’ve never fought someone of that caliber.
“He’s big and not just a boxing star, he’s an icon, a mega-star. That would be different and it would send me somewhere else popularity-wise.
“Pacquiao has been in the sport 20-something years, he’s an icon even outside the sport. Everybody knows who Manny Pacquiao is. That would be a great fight for me.”
The eight-division Filipino world champion will most likely pursue the biggest fight for the least risk, McGregor fits both of those molds, and there has been talk about Pacquiao and McGregor for some time now.
Spence continued: “I don’t blame him, Manny Pacquiao earned that right. He’s earned his right to make his money and fight whoever he wants to fight, because he fought whoever was lined up to fight him.
“”I’m not mad at it at all, if I was 40-something and was offered that kind of money to fight Conor McGregor, I’d take the fight too, I don’t blame him.””
Regardless of whether Pacquiao versus Spence comes together or not, Spence will surely be facing someone else of a very high caliber. But in all honesty, this 26-0 stud deserves the Pacquiao fight, he’s ran through every one of his opponents and finished 21 of them.
Do you think Errol Spence Jr gets the Manny Pacquiao fight, should he defeat Danny Garcia?
