Video: Conor McGregor Says He Can Dismantle Floyd Mayweather

As UFC featherweight star Conor McGregor prepares to face a new opponent in Chad Mendes at UFC 189, the world of MMA (mixed martial arts) has been forced to wait for a fight they really wanted to see. Luckily, the ‘Money’ fight is already a much-anticipated showdown, but the fact remains that Mendes could throw a big spanner in the works on July 11th. We will have to wait just a bit longer to see Jose Aldo take on his fierce Irish rival. It’s not like we had to wait five years+ like boxing fans did for Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao.

Providing McGregor can beat Mendes in Las Vegas, this will be the perfect time for Aldo vs. McGregor, again much-unlike Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. In a recent interview with Conan O’Brien, as transcribed by, ‘The Notorious’ discusses the boxing great Mayweather, and says he would be open to fighting him in the boxing ring:

“If you’re asking would I like to fight Floyd, who would not like to dance around the ring for $180 million?ย I certainly know he would not want to step into my world, the world of pure unarmed combat where there is no limitations, but I would most certainly step into his world,” the Irishman said. “I would certainly box him if the opportunity arose. Most certainly.”

“There’s no real fight in boxing left for Floyd anyway,” McGregor said. “After the Manny fight happened, there’s no more real buzz. If you’re looking for a fight that could generate interest, it must be across a match of different styles. I’ve said it before. I don’t feel boxing is the style of fighting that could beat Floyd. But saying that, there are many, many forms of fighting that can beat him. So, if we were to get it on, I would most certainly dismantle him also.”

UFC women’s bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey also said she could kick Floyd Mayweather’s ass, but a bout with McGregor is about 100 times more likely, but also improbable still. If there were a platform for it to take place though, it’s not crazy to imagine PPV (pay-per-view) buys shattering all records, if only just for the freak show factor. ‘The Notorious’ needs to get by Mendes before he can even consider the title fight with Junior, let alone an inter-sport crossover bout with Mayweather.

That being said, we are still waiting for an actual boxing champ vs. MMA champ fight, and no, Couture vs. Tony does NOT COUNT. Should or would the UFC allow something like this? Probably not, but it’s fair to say that the entertaining Irish brawler would probably never need to work another day in his life even if Mayweather beat him. McGregor is making good use of time promoting himself, but equally he could be filling his plate with words to eat if defeated by the Team Alpha Male wrestler at UFC 189.
