George Kambosos Jr. Praises Teofimo Lopez Following Win In Comeback

George Kambosos Jr. has nothing but respect for his former opponent Teofimo Lopez.

Last November, Kambosos Jr. stunned Lopez with a decision win to become the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and The Ring lightweight champion. It was one of the biggest upsets in 2021 and one of the biggest upsets in recent memory.

Following the fight, Kambosos Jr. lost a decision to Devin Haney to lose his belts while Lopez moved up in weight and knocked out Pedro Campa in his return bout. For Kambosos Jr. he says he is proud of Lopez for returning to the win column in a big way after the stunning loss.

“Me and Teo always go back and forth,” said Kambosos Jr. during a recent interview with FightHype.com (h/t BoxingScene). “I still go back at him when he brings up all of these excuses that he has but I’m proud of him. I’m actually very proud of him. To come back after the fight that we had, it shows that he’s a champion. I wish him all the best at 140.”

Although Teofimo Lopez got the stoppage win at 140lbs that he was after and looked good, George Kambosos Jr. believes Lopez needs a few more wins at 140lbs to prove he is among the best.

“His skills were evident,” Kambosos Jr. said. “Campa was obviously a guy that they picked to build that confidence. Now does he have a lot of work to do for the bigger names at 140? Obviously, yes, but I’m sure he’ll be up to the challenge.”

As for George Kambosos Jr., his focus is back on Haney for the rematch on October 16 in Australia. He’s looking to reclaim the titles he lost to Haney back in June as he’s looking to reclaim the titles. Yet, win or lose against Haney, Kambosos Jr. is confident he and Lopez will also meet again.

“We fight again in the future, no problem. But for now, I’m focused on Devin Haney,” Kambosos Jr. concluded.
