How would Carl Froch realistically fare against Jake Paul?

Carl Froch

With every passing week, it seems as if Jake Paul calls out yet another retired star from the world of combat sports. This time around, the 26-year-old has thrown down the challenge to former super-middleweight world champion Carl Froch, who is 19 years Paul’s senior. Astonishingly, despite Froch enjoying a prestigious career at the very top of the sport, he has been quick to accept Paul’s offer should he first beat Tommy Fury.

Will Paul beat Fury?

Encouragingly for fight fans who want to see a potential showdown between Froch and the YouTuber, the most recent Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury odds from Paddy Power actually price the American at just -125 to win. Indeed, the latest boxing odds predict what many thought would be an unexpected outcome when a fight between Paul and Tyson Fury’s brother was first suggested, but on the eve of the battle, the forecast is that Paul will win in Riyadh.

What this essentially means is that there is a very good chance that the subplot between Paul and Froch will evolve to a point where a fight could happen in the future.

Although given how quick Froch was to respond to Paul, there is a genuine reason to believe that irrespective of the outcome between Fury and Paul in Saudi Arabia, this is an exhibition fight he would take. In fact, there is an argument to be made about Froch knowing exactly what he was doing by calling Paul a clown in the lead-up to his fight against Fury, which was covered by the Metro.

In other words, it doesn’t take a lot for Paul to bite back when his ability in the ring is questioned and given Froch’s reach as an international boxing pundit, the 45-year-old knew his remarks would make headlines that would irk Paul.

So, in the event of the two going head to head, how would Froch fare against Paul?

Froch would struggle

The answer might not be as straightforward as you think, given that as touched on briefly, almost two decades separate the two in age. As Paul knows, this is the great leveler when it comes to squaring up against ex-professional fighters as someone with no previous experience in the ring; the power and strength of youth has so far proved too much for the 26-year-old’s aging opponents.

There is no reason to believe that things would be any different if Paul fought Froch who, crucially, has been retired for eight years after calling it a day in 2015, as reported by The Guardian at the time. That is a significant amount of time out of the ring and with Paul training every day as he seeks to build a career as a boxer, there is likely to be a noticeable difference in the stamina levels of both men during a fight.

Of course, in Froch’s heyday, this match wouldn’t have gone further than a round before the Englishman won by way of brutal knockout but those times seem like a lifetime ago. The reality is that Froch fits the description of fighters that Paul knows he can beat and with a 6-0 record, the American hasn’t yet bitten off too much that he can chew, which is unlikely to change if he fights Froch.
