John Fury Told Tyson Fury To Drop The WBC Belt To Save Joshua Fight

John Fury told his son, Tyson Fury, to relinquish the WBC and fight Anthony Joshua rather than take on Deontay Wilder for the third time.

Unfortunately for Fury Snr and fight fans around the world, his request was ignored. ‘The Gypsy King’ has since gone on to sign a deal to complete his trilogy with Wilder – July 24 is expected to be the date for the fight.

In an interview with BT Sport, John Fury explained that while he is still able his goal in life is to help his sons Tommy and Tyson. However, due to Tyson’s superstardom, he’s finding it extremely difficult to have his voice heard with so many other people in his son’s ear.

“While I’m alive and while I’m fit and able I want to do the best I can for Tommy. And Tyson, but Tyson obviously, he’s in a different league now, 20,000 yes men around him,” Fury said. “This is what happens when you get to the top. There’s a lot of leeches out there, a lot of hangers on, as you can see with what was happening in America with him. Appalling work, to be honest with you, but that’s just my opinion.

The “appalling work” Fury’s father is referring to is the collapse of an all-British undisputed fight with Anthony Joshua, and the super quick signing of a trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder.

“It’s diabolical, isn’t it? You’re geared up to fight one man and all of a sudden on the 11th hour…,” John Fury said. “It’s all sorted in 24 hours, he’s signing contracts in the hall of a boxing venue. They’re around him like locusts and I think to myself, ‘how can you think straight with all that round you?’ For my money, it’s a mistake. It’s a mistake. He can blame his team can’t he, no one else. Anything rushed is no good and that’s been rushed.

During a recent phone call John Fury told ‘The Gypsy King’ to relinquish his WBC belt and go ahead with the Joshua fight on August 14.

“I want him to fight AJ. I have no interest in Deontay Wilder. So why has he gotta fight Wilder? I told him on a phone conversation, ‘chuck the belt in the bin, let him have it, come back and fight AJ on the 14th of August like was planned’. But who am I? I’m nobody unfortunately. A voice that only a certain amount of people hear. And because you don’t drive a Rolls Royce and live in a castle it falls on deaf ears.”

Do you think John Fury was right to call on his son to relinquish the WBC belt to secure a fight with Anthony Joshua?
